How to Clean a Phantom Wallet (and Reclaim the SOL)
July 28, 2026 · 6 min read
Phantom is where most people live on Solana — and after a few months of memecoins, airdrops and mints, it starts to look like it. Tokens you never bought. NFTs you don't remember minting. And underneath the visible clutter, something you can't see at all: SOL parked as refundable deposits inside accounts you forgot existed. Cleaning a Phantom wallet properly means dealing with both layers. Here's how, in four steps.
Hiding is not cleaning
Phantom lets you hide spam tokens and NFTs from view, and if your collectibles tab is full of "claim your reward" junk, you should — your wallet instantly looks saner. But hiding is cosmetic. The token accounts behind those spam tokens still exist on-chain, and so do the empty accounts left behind by every token you ever swapped in and out of.
Each of those accounts holds about 0.002 SOLas a refundable deposit — what Solana calls rent. It isn't lost; the network hands it back the moment the account is closed. We covered the mechanics in what rent on Solana actually is. The short version: a real clean doesn't just tidy what you see — it closes the dead accounts and puts their deposits back in your balance.
Step 1 — See the number before you touch anything
Start with a scan, not a signature. A good cleaner lets you paste your Phantom address and see exactly what's reclaimable without connecting your wallet at all. The typical picture: casual users find roughly 0.05–0.15 SOL locked across 25–75 empty accounts, active traders 0.2–0.5 SOL, and heavy memecoin traders often 0.5–1+ SOL.
Scanning first costs nothing and tells you whether the rest of this guide is worth ten minutes of your time. If the number is a few cents, hide the spam and move on with your life. If it's half a SOL, keep reading.
Step 2 — Tidy inside Phantom
Some of the cleanup lives inside the wallet itself:
- Hide spam tokens and NFTs.Phantom can flag and hide unknown tokens so they stop cluttering your balance list. Do this freely — it's reversible and touches nothing on-chain.
- Never interact with the spam itself. Airdropped tokens and NFTs that promise rewards on some external site are drainer bait. Hiding them is fine; visiting their links is not.
- Burn the obvious junk. Phantom has a built-in burn option for unwanted NFTs, one at a time, and each burn returns a small bit of rent. Fine for a handful — tedious past that.
Step 3 — Close the empty accounts and take the rent back
This is where the real SOL is, and it's the part Phantom doesn't currently do for you: batch-closing the empty token accounts left behind by old trades. You have two honest options.
Do it yourself with the CLI. Closing accounts by hand is a standard Solana operation and costs nothing but network fees — we wrote up exactly how in closing token accounts manually vs using a cleaner. It's a fine choice if you're comfortable in a terminal and the account count is low.
Or batch it in one signature.A dedicated cleaner like SolHealth scans everything at once — classic SPL accounts, Token-2022 accounts, dust positions and worthless NFTs, plus leftover program buffers if you're a dev — and bundles the closes and burns into a single transaction you sign in Phantom. The fee is 2% of the SOL recovered, so you keep 98%, and the scan itself is free.

Run a free check — no connectStep 4 — Sign safely
Everything above only works if you stay in control, so before you sign anything from any tool, check three things. It should be non-custodial: you sign with your own Phantom wallet, and your private key never leaves your device. It should never, under any circumstance, ask for your seed phrase — no legitimate cleaner needs it, and any site that asks is a drainer. And Phantom's transaction preview should make sense: closing accounts shows SOL flowing into your wallet, minus the fee. If a preview shows your balance draining out instead, reject it and close the tab.
FAQ
Will cleaning touch my active tokens? No. Only empty accounts are closed, plus whatever dust or NFTs you explicitly choose to burn. Positions you still hold are left untouched.
Do I need to reinstall or reset Phantom? No. Cleaning happens on-chain, not in the app. Your wallet, seed phrase and addresses stay exactly as they are — there's just less junk in them.
How often should I do this? After every heavy trading stretch. That's when empty accounts pile up fastest, and a scan takes seconds.
Keep it clean
Empty accounts accumulate during exactly the periods you're least likely to notice — memecoin runs where you're in and out of new tokens every day. Hide the spam, burn the junk, close the dead accounts, and check back after the next run. That's the whole routine, and the rent it returns was yours all along.
